Picture a small speaker sitting on your kitchen counter. No screen. It's listening, and according to this week's reporting, it's also watching.

That's the shape of OpenAI's first consumer gadget, revealed in a Bloomberg report from Mark Gurman. The details are still rumored, not confirmed by OpenAI: a screen-free home device, reportedly around $200 to $300, built around ChatGPT and packed with a camera, microphones, and motion sensors. The official reveal is expected later this year, with the thing shipping in 2027.

Almost every headline is filing this under "the Apple and Alexa challenger." That framing is fine, but it skips the part that actually lands in your home. This isn't a speaker that wakes up when you say a magic word. It's designed to sit there and observe, quietly, all the time.

Who's asking to watch

Worth remembering who's building it. This same month, Apple filed a trade-secret lawsuit against OpenAI over how it allegedly built its hardware team. Those are claims in a lawsuit, and OpenAI publicly disputes them. I'm not here to say anyone stole anything. But the company now asking to put an always-on camera in your living room is also spending July in court over how it got into hardware. That's a fair reason to slow down and read the settings page carefully.

Here's what "passive observation" can quietly mean. A camera that's always on doesn't just answer questions. It can register when a room is empty, when kids come home, when you go to bed, who visits and when. On its own, none of that is sinister. Stacked up over months and possibly sent to a server you can't see, it becomes a detailed map of your private routines.

And this isn't only tomorrow's problem. The Alexa, Google Nest, or Ring device you already plugged in months ago runs on the same trade-off. Convenience up front, and a data arrangement most of us clicked past during setup. The OpenAI speaker just makes the trade-off louder, which makes now a good time to check the ones already in your house.

The 4 questions

You don't need to be technical to do that. You need four questions.

  1. Where does the footage actually go? Is video and audio processed on the device itself, or shipped to the company's cloud? On-device is far friendlier to your privacy. If it leaves your home, you've lost most of your control over it.
  2. Is there a real off switch? Not a software toggle buried in an app, but a physical shutter over the lens or a hardware button that cuts the mic. Software can be changed in an update. A cover over the camera cannot.
  3. Who else can reach the recordings? Company staff for "quality review"? Law enforcement with a request? Advertisers or third-party partners? If the privacy policy is vague on this, treat that vagueness as your answer.
  4. What's the default retention? How long is your data kept before it's deleted, and can you shorten that window or turn it off? Defaults are usually set for the company's benefit, not yours. This is the setting worth changing first.

What it means for you

Take five minutes this weekend and run those four questions against one device you already own. Open the app, find the privacy and data settings, and see how many you can actually answer. My guess is you'll turn at least one default down.

When OpenAI's speaker gets its official reveal later this year, you'll have a checklist ready before it ever reaches your counter. A smart home should work for you. These four questions are how you keep it that way.
